Every Dream Starts With One Question

What's your dream?

It sounds like a simple question.

But we've learned it isn't.

For many people, no one has asked them that question in years. Some have never been asked at all.

We've watched people laugh because they thought we were joking. We've watched people stare into space because they couldn't remember what they once wanted. We've watched people cry because somewhere along the way they stopped believing their dream mattered.

That's why we ask.

Because we believe something changes the moment a dream is spoken out loud.

It Started With a Camper...

In 2020, Jana and I bought a small tow-behind camper and headed across the country with one mission.

We wanted to meet people.

Not influencers.
Not celebrities.
Not people with perfect lives.

Just ordinary people.

At every gas station, campground, coffee shop, beach, and small town we visited, we asked one question:

"What's your dream?"

When someone shared it, we handed them a sticker and asked them to write it down.

Then we placed their dream on the outside of our camper.

Soon the camper was covered.

Hundreds of dreams.

Each one different.

Each one important.

Some people dreamed about starting a business.

Some wanted to write a book.

Some wanted to repair a relationship.

Some wanted to travel.

Some wanted to find purpose again.

Every sticker represented a human being willing to believe that their future could be different from their past.

And whenever we could, we tried to help move that dream one step forward.

Tye Had Forgotten He Was Allowed to Dream

One afternoon we met Tye at a gas station near the Georgia-Florida line.

He and his wife had lost their home in a fire and were living in a motel.

When we asked,

"What's your dream?"

he immediately answered,

"I don't have one."

Most people would have accepted that answer.

We couldn't.

So we stood there.

We talked.

We asked another question.

Then another.

Little by little, the conversation changed.

Because the truth wasn't that Tye didn't have a dream.

He had simply been surviving for so long that he had stopped giving himself permission to imagine anything beyond tomorrow.

About fifteen minutes later, he picked up the marker.

For the first time in a long time...

...he wrote down a dream.

It wasn't just a sticker.

It was hope.

Sometimes the first step toward a new future isn't achieving a dream.

It's remembering you're still allowed to have one.

Sheila Dreamed Bigger Than Herself

Then there was Sheila.

She was a retired music teacher we met in Cocoa Beach.

When we asked her what her dream was, she didn't talk about herself.

She talked about children.

She wrote:

"I want to start a music school for underserved youth, to give them an outlet to create their rhythm in life."

That's the kind of dream that reminds us why we started asking the question in the first place.

Dreams aren't always about getting more.

Sometimes they're about giving more.

Sometimes they're about creating opportunities for people you'll never even meet.

Those dreams deserve to be seen too.

Why We Still Ask

The camper trip eventually ended.

The question didn't.

Today we ask the same question through Living Lucky® because we still believe dreams matter.

A dream gives your attention somewhere to aim.

It gives your decisions a direction.

It gives tomorrow something to pull toward.

And sometimes...
